More than ten years have passed since the advent of electronic cigarettes. Since then, e-cigarettes have grown in popularity. In the UK, for example, new research comes the closest to proving that e-cigarettes are safer than smoking now that nearly 3 million Britons are using e-cigarettes. Despite extensive research showing that e-cigarettes are safer than smoking, there is still a major misconception that e-cigarettes are just as harmful as smoking, which could discourage smokers from switching to e-cigarettes who would otherwise quit could benefit. Now a new study by a team of scientists from University College London is helping to allay that fear. They found that e-cigarettes are much safer than smoking.

E- cigarettes are much safer than smoking

It is well known that smoking is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. About 6 million people die each year from diseases caused by smoking. There are more than 5,000 chemicals in cigarette smoke, at least 70 of which can cause cancer.

However, e-cigarettes do not contain tobacco. Instead, the liquid they carry may contain nicotine, which can be heated into vapor and inhaled. For people who are addicted to nicotine, this can also meet their needs without causing cancer. E-cigarettes do not produce smoke that contains many chemicals. Therefore, these devices should be safer than smoking.

However, when e-cigarettes first hit store shelves, there wasn't enough research to establish this. Early research shows that the levels of harmful chemicals in e-cigarette liquids and the vapor they produce are not as high as in tobacco cigarettes. In fact, these levels in e-liquid and vapor are so low that Public Health England and the Royal College of Physicians consider e-cigarettes around 95% safer than smoking

How sure are you?

The study followed a group of e-cigarette users who had been vaping for an average of 17 months and estimated their levels of nicotine and other potentially harmful chemicals by examining their urine and saliva samples. The team then compared the results to smokers. They also looked at people using nicotine replacement therapy, which often helps people quit or replace smoking.

"We study users of nicotine replacement therapy because we know these products are safe to use," Shahab said. "We thought they were a good comparison," he added, since users get their nicotine from smoke-free sources just like e-cigarette users.

Interestingly, the nicotine levels found in the sample of e-cigarette users were very similar to those of people using nicotine replacement therapy. The key findings came as the team examined samples for potentially toxic chemicals. They found that a chemical, NNAL, the leading cause of lung cancer, was 97 times lower in vapers than in smokers. In addition, they found that NNAL levels in e-cigarette users were very similar to those using nicotine replacement therapy. "We evaluated the safety of nicotine replacement therapy for three years and found no major long-term health concerns," he said.

What does that mean now?

This research confirms that e-cigarettes are safer than smoking. So if you are a smoker, the best thing you can do for your health is to quit smoking. Many smokers have successfully quit smoking with e-cigarettes.
