When it rains, it pours - and when you have a leaky roof, that is exactly what you are going to get. If you are not proactive, you can end up with much more than just a wet floor in your home. Water that enters your home through compromised roofing systems can create moisture problems and weakened support structures that will lead to expensive repairs down the road.

If you have got a leaky roof, you should get it fixed ASAP. But what if the weather is bad? The thing is, you do not have to watch your ceiling cave in and your floors warp as you wait for the sun to come back out – there are easy steps you can take right away to ensure that they are not compromised by moisture or damaged by rain. Keep reading to learn four ways to deal with roof leaks during bad weather.

Turn Off the Power Supply

You should never try fixing a roof leak during a storm or heavy rainstorm because it could cause serious electrical problems for your home. Before attempting any roof repairs on your own, turn off all power sources from inside of your home so that no one gets shocked during work being done on the exterior of your home.

Find the Water Drips

The best way to find the precise location of a leak is to find the drip. This means taking a ladder and flashlight and heading to the attic. Once you are there, look for cracks, holes, and any other evidence of water damage, but also look for dripping water coming from the underside of the roof decking. You may also be able to use that to pinpoint the spot, since some leaks may create a darkened wet spot on the roofing decking.

Take Preventative Measures

Once you have found the drip, it is important to block any further water from contacting surfaces in the attic, particularly any wood framing or drywall. To do this, place a piece of plywood across the attic joists beneath the leak and put a 5-gallon bucket to catch the leaking water. If possible, make several trips up onto your roof as needed to transfer buckets full of water off your home.

Try to Patch Up the Problem

If you see where the water is cominxg through, use caulking or some other sealant to plug up the hole. This will not work if there are multiple holes in your roof, but if there is only one and it is small enough, this could fix it temporarily until you can get it permanently repaired.
