Whether you call it walking softly, treading lightly, or not making no noise, all hunters could improve their stealth in the woods. We try our best, but something, such as a twig snapping or a boot splashing in a puddle, can give us away.

In addition to how we walk or what kind of footwear we wear, we should consider how we pack our backpacks and how noisy our clothes are. I am sure you have heard your outerwear or coat rustle as you walked through a wooded area on a quiet day.

In the wilderness, it is impossible to remain silent all the time, Even then, you’ll need training. With this in mind, we have come up with five things to keep in mind when considering how to stay silent.

Creep, Don't March

There is probably no better way to become inconspicuous to our quarry than to learn to walk through the woods quietly. It would help if you started wearing good shoes, such as soft-soled shoes or lightweight boots.

You will need to improve your gait by walking heel-to-toe bending at the knees. We suggest placing your foot on its outer edge, then rolling the rest of your sole down until it reaches the ground, avoiding the telltale crunch.

You can increase your chances of staying quiet by slowing your pace while remaining aware of your surroundings. Lifting your foot and pointing it to the ground will reduce your chance of snagging anything, and it might even help you reach something.

Quiet Your Body

As you walk to your stand or blind, take your time so that you don’t overexert yourself and start to breathe heavily. Exhalations through your nose are quieter, but everyone breathes differently. Start by giving yourself enough time to complete your tasks, such as walking to your stand or blind.

You should avoid low-hanging branches or brushy areas where your clothing can be snagged. Bear in mind that you will have a bow, rifle, or shotgun, as well as your backpack, all of which can and will hook across vegetation. Slim down your accessories and do your best to go with the minimum.

Wear Quiet Clothing

It used to be necessary to wear obnoxiously loud rain gear to hunt in wet conditions. Today, we have access to some of the best waterproof hunting clothes available, and with several brands competing for our dollars, the options are growing. In addition to staying warm and dry, GORE-TEX and polar fleece also offer noiseless properties. Products that withstand tough underbrush won’t ruin every hunt, but they aren’t needed for every hunt.

Control Your Scent

Staying scent-free during hunting season is one of the most important things you can do to avoid getting busted by whitetail deer. Your scent is so crucial to the hunt and scouting. Controlling your scent will help become invisible in the woods.

Consider Everything Else!

Just like humans, dear and other animals pay close attention to fields, ridges, and old logging roads. While traversing areas that leave you out in the open, or these spots, take it slow and be patient. Use the sun’s angle to your advantage, lingering in the shadows whenever possible to keep your silhouette from looking obvious. Make sure all areas of your body that can be camouflaged are covered.
